Nothing about his predicament made sense to our family at the time. He was 38, a nonsmoker and nondrinker, with no history of cancer in his family. My parents were conservative evangelicals deeply skeptical of the medical industry, and his diagnosis kicked their beliefs into high gear. Traveling evangelists and local preachers claimed that the cancer was, in fact, a satanic attack. This gave us a way out: We simply had to muster enough faith to believe a miracle was possible and God would heal him.

When Britain’s foreign secretary, David Cameron, went to Washington on Tuesday, he made all the usual stops, from the State Department to Capitol Hill. But it was his pilgrimage to Palm Beach, Fla., where he met former President Donald J. Trump for dinner on Monday evening at Mar-a-Lago, that grabbed most of the attention. Mr. Cameron is the first top British government official to meet with Mr. Trump since he left the White House. His visit — ostensibly to cajole Mr. Trump into backing additional American military aid to Ukraine — attests to Mr. Trump’s influence over a far-right faction of House Republicans who have been holding up a vote. Mr. Cameron, a onetime prime minister, has emerged as almost a shadow British leader abroad, standing in for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is busy with a looming general election at home.

So now, rather than staying up to date with current events, my patients are withdrawing as much as possible from the news. Withdrawing from political information or solicitations is an active stance as contrasted with the more common idea of disengagement or apathy, which is a passive stance. Their sense of purpose comes from maintaining an active stance of withdrawal as a silent protest against a system that feels broken and unfair. Having a sense of agency is better for mental health than acquiescence, but it can be tricky to find the line between being informed versus overwhelmed. However, developing a sense of purpose is a more effective antidote to despair than active withdrawal.

To the Editor:Re “They Were My Friends for Years. Trump Tore Us Apart,” by Art Cullen (Opinion guest essay, Feb. 8):I must thank Art Cullen for his beautifully rendered piece that speaks to one of the tragedies in the wake of the Trump presidency. This loss of friendship is a divide that is often forgotten in the wider lens of politics, reducing the Trump effect into red and blue states, Republicans and Democrats. Paul ThalerBronxTo the Editor:Art Cullen describes the loss of friends due to political differences between them. The left has a terrible inability to countenance differing viewpoints in my experience.

CNN —Owen Monroe was 18 days old when he made history, becoming the first person in the world to receive a partial heart transplant. At the time of his first operation, Owen’s heart was the size of a strawberry. Researchers have been working to make growing heart valves a reality through tissue engineering, germinating them from cells in a lab. She wrote a recent editorial about the potential of partial heart transplants, but she was not involved in this research. Another child who’s gotten a partial heart transplant hasn’t needed any anti-rejection medication and is doing well.

Her son was born at 25 weeks and spent 145 days in the NICU. When I was nearly 25 weeks pregnant, my colon ruptured. They warned that this would likely send me into early labor but said it would save my life. But our son would spend nearly five months — or 145 days — in the NICU. When Ryder was in the NICU, we still took monthly milestone pictures and dressed him up for holidays.

Kevin Lemarque | ReutersFormer White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson in a new book says ex-President Donald Trump's then-lawyer Rudy Giuliani groped her on Jan. 6, 2021, The Guardian reported Wednesday. Hutchinson writes that Giuliani — who is 52 years older than her — put his hand "under my blazer, then my skirt" on that day, according to the report. I lower my eyes and watch his free hand reach for the hem of my blazer," Hutchinson writes. "I fight against the tension in my muscles and recoil from Rudy's grip," Hutchinson writes.

By now, we should be used to HBO’s series pulling the rug out from beneath our expectations. Still, as more than one pundit observed of Logan’s death, this one shocked more than merely surprised. Not me, though I do miss Brian Cox already because few actors anywhere are as adroit at playing dyspeptic sociopaths. It would be at the very least ironic if “Greg the Egg,” the minion’s minion, stumbled into power as if he tripped on a sidewalk. I’ll say no more on this except to suggest that you all try to remember who in the end won that “Game of Thrones.” It’s not inevitable.
Hong Kong CNN —Kabosu, the internet-famous dog who inspired the “doge” meme and influenced digital culture for a decade, is seriously ill with leukemia and liver disease. While Sato said Kabosu’s appetite had returned, she had previously blogged that the dog was moving around less, and more slowly. It reached a peak value of more than $400 in 2014, and is considered the first “meme coin” or satire of cryptocurrency. After it raised funds for the Ukrainian military, the country’s Ministry of Defense tweeted its thanks with a photoshopped image of a shiba inu in fatigues. In Sato’s most recent posts about Kabosu, she said the dog was “in a very dangerous condition” and appeared to be jaundiced, but was also taking antibiotics.
CNN —The idea of a nasty Christmas movie is nothing new, but “Violent Night” still manages to deliver the goods, mixing “Die Hard” and “Rambo”-style action with a fair amount of hokey ho-ho-hokum. David Harbour makes a particularly good cranky, butt-kicking Santa, in a movie that offers the sort of shared experience that should bring theaters some much-needed cheer. Still, pulling off that combination of over-the-top violence, goofy comedy and (in this case) Hallmark-style meaning-of-Christmas stuff is a pretty formidable challenge, and while the setting proves slightly claustrophobic, “Violent Night” mostly overcomes it. That might not be the formula for a fun-for-the-whole-family holiday perennial, but to its credit, those sitting through “Violent Night” should rarely stay silent for long. “Violent Night” premieres December 2 in US theaters.
Centering on Julia Roberts and George Clooney, two great, aging stars of rom-coms past, “Ticket to Paradise” was always going to be a throwback. Clooney and Roberts play David and Georgia Cotton, a long-divorced couple. The divorced couple who reconcile is an old rom-com trope. Even young gorgeous individuals in a tropical paradise aren’t as effortlessly, gracefully charming as George Clooney and Julia Roberts batting putdowns back and forth. That’s ultimately also the biggest similarity between the two generations of rom-com love.
